This large 49" by 57" piece has various shades of indigo blue and red dyes which was applied using a paste resist printing process known as tsutsugaki to create these designs

It is made of hand crafted cryptomeria wood with over 20 coats of Japanese special natural urushi lacquer

while in one hand he holds a scroll engraved with tiny characters

Used for storing documents, money and other precious items it is made throughout of solid Kiri wood (paulownia) front and case. Kodansu chest were a special piece used to store one's most valued items. There are two lock plates but the locks have over time become inoperable and no key is necessary and no risk of getting locked out. Height = 21. 25" (54cm) Width = 24. 75 (63cm)
