This two piece chest was made in the mid Meiji era (1868 1912) of red lacquered Kuri (Japanese Chestnut) front and sugi (Japanese Cedar) case interiors. Ishodansu were used to store precious kimono, obi and accessories. It features the distinctive hardware of tansu made in the Yonezawa region in this case decorated in a Sakura (cherry blossom) motif.
